Gantry 5

Since the departure of Spain, the colonizing power, in 1976, the problem of Western Sahara has remained unsolved. Morocco claims sovereignty over it while the Polisario Front with the majority of the Sahrawi population is for the independence of this territory in the form of a Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) which is to date recognized by 23 states.

In 1990, a UN settlement plan led to a ceasefire agreement proclaimed on September 6, 1991 between the parties. This ceasefire was conceived as the precondition for the establishment of a UN mission (MINURSO), the reduction of the Moroccan presence and the organization of a self-determination referendum in January 1992 under the control of the UN and the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Since then Morocco has been occupying 80% of the territory of Western Sahara with the coastal zone, while the Saharans are quartered in camps near the Algerian border and Mauritania. Needless to say that Morocco has access to the natural wealth and resources from fishing, phosphates and to the port of El Aaiun which is a strategic maritime infrastructure for Morocco. Its commercial activities amount to 5 million tonnes (exports of phosphate, sand, fish...etc.). It should be noted that despite the resumption of clashes, the port continues to function normally with the export of fish meal and fish oil. The Moroccan kingdom, with the support in particular of France and the USA, is putting great energy into claiming this territory, when it remains very quiet about the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melill in northern Morocco.
Since the ceasefire agreements, no progress has been made mainly due to the blockade imposed by Morocco on the question of the self-determination referendum and it is Morocco's recent decision to increase its presence, including military, in Western Sahara which triggered a resumption of hostilities.
It is therefore high time a solution in accordance with the wishes of the Saharan people be implemented. The UN has a mandate to that effect that it does not implement. This attitude governs the "inaction" of the United Nations on other issues such as that of Palestine.
This "inaction" serves the interests of the great imperialist powers and their regional allies.
To put an end to it, it is essential to lead the fight against our French imperialism which is one of the main supports of the Moroccan monarchy.
